"역사 속의 섹슈얼리티": 강의계획서 (2023년 1학기)

박사학위논문(http://www.riss.kr/link?id=T16548797)을 포함해 지금까지 나의 지적 여정을 접한 소수의 독자들은 눈치채시겠지만, 수업의 전체적인 문제의식과 얼개는 박사학위논문 및 이후 프로젝트 구상안을 바탕으로 설계되었다. 18세기 영국문학·지성사를 공부하는 연구자로서 나는 지성사와 문학 연구 사이에 여전히 커다란 공백지대가 있으며, 특히 젠더·섹슈얼리티 관련해서 당대의 정치적이고 도덕적인 언어의 논리를 이해할 때 새롭게 조명해볼 수 있는 주제가 적지 않다고 생각한다. 짧게는 그러한 공백지대를 직시할 수 있는 시선을, 길게는 이른바 '서구 사상 전통'과 성의 관계를 억압과 해방, 지배와 저항이라는 여전히 연구자들의 뇌리를 지배하고 있는 단순한 대립구도보다 깊이 있게 음미할 수 있는 지적인 역량을 제공하는 것이 이 수업의 과제다. 설령 단 한 학기라 할지라도 갓 박사를 마친 연구자가 박사학위논문의 문제의식을 더 크게 펼쳐내는 수업을 해볼 수 있는 기회는 오늘날 한국 학계에서 매우 희귀한 것임을 잘 안다. 타 학과의 젊은 연구자가 대학원 수업을 맡도록 허락해주신 성균관대학교 사학과 선생님들께 깊이 감사드린다.

강의 개요

 

오늘날 사람들은 스스로가 과거의 그 어느 때보다 성을, 또 그 중요성을 잘 알고 있다고 생각합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 “성의 역사”가 무엇인지 정확히 설명하기란 의외로 쉽지 않습니다. 실제로 우리는 성풍속, 성과학(담론), 성 관련 제도, 여성성·남성성, 여성주의·여권, 젠더·퀴어적 실천과 같이 무척이나 온갖 상이한 주제의 연구가 성의 역사라는 이름 하에 묶이는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 이는 역사적 범주로서의 성이 갖는 독특한 성격에서 기인합니다. 섹스, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티의 구별과 같은 까다로운 문제에서부터 짐작할 수 있듯, 성은 물질적으로든 개념적으로든 그 실체를 명확히 규정할 수 있는 대상이 아닙니다. 동시에, 그럼에도 불구하고, 인간 사회는 언제나 국가보건, 사회도덕, 종교, 가정생활, 예술, 자기관리와 같은 다양한 각도를 통해 성을 주목하고 조정하려 노력해 왔습니다. 요컨대 성의 역사는 고유한 실체로서의 성이 아닌, 성을 둘러싼 다양하고 복잡한 실천들의 역사인 셈입니다.

 

본 수업의 일차적인 목표는 그중에서도 성에 관한 담론적이고 사상적인 실천들의 역사를 이해하는 것입니다. 하지만 이것이 마치 성적인 담론·사상이란 대상이 존재하니 그 역사를 살펴보면 된다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 그와 달리 본 수업은 국가, 종교, 가정, 사회, 도덕·윤리와 같이 인간을 이해하고 또 통치하고자 했던 다양한 담론을 둘러보고, 그것들이 인간의 ‘성적인 측면’을 어떤 식으로 규정해 왔는가를 지성사적으로 이해하고자 합니다(이때 지성사란 과거의 담론을 구성하는 언어를 그 자체로 하나의 역사적 탐구의 대상으로 설정함을 의미합니다). 과거인들이 섹슈얼리티·젠더 및 그와 인접한 범주들을 어떠한 논리와 문제의식을 통해 사고했는가를 살펴볼 때, 우리는 성이라는 주제를 단순히 하나의 고립된 영역으로 바라보는 태도에 빠지지 않을 수 있습니다. 즉 본 수업의 궁극적인 목적은 성의 역사를 통해 서구 근대가 인간과 사회, 문명을 사고해온 방식을 한층 깊이 있게 파악하는 것입니다.

 

수업은 총 4부로 구성되어 있습니다. 1부(1-3주차)에서는 전체 수업의 목표와 접근법을 개괄한 후, 고대 그리스·로마 및 초기·중세 기독교 전통에서 가정과 남녀, 섹슈얼리티를 다루는 다양한 장르·문제의식의 문헌을 검토합니다. 2부(4-6주차)는 르네상스 및 종교개혁 시대 영국에서 남성 및 여성의 개혁·문명화라는 과제가 출현하는 양상을 살펴봅니다. 수업의 본론 격인 3부(7-11주차)는 장기 18세기 영국을 중심으로 여성과 남성, 가정과 국가의 관계 등과 연결된 다양한 주제들을 소화합니다. 마지막 4부(12-15주차)는 18세기 계몽주의 문명사의 도식이 이후 19-20세기에 집필된 ‘성의 역사’, ‘여성(주의)사’에서 어떻게 변용되었는지를 추적해봅니다.

 

본 수업은 수강생에게 다음과 같은 훈련을 제공하고자 합니다. 첫째, (주로 17-18세기 영어권에서 생산된) 1차 문헌을 꼼꼼히, 주의 깊게 읽고 비판적으로 이해하는 연습입니다. 둘째, 주어진 2차 문헌을 정확히 읽고 연구사의 지형을 이해하는 연습입니다. 셋째, 특히 수업 4부에서, ‘역사 서술’을 수행하는 문헌을 하나의 1차문헌 혹은 사료로서 어떻게 다룰지를 숙고합니다. 일반적으로 역사학적 연구가 과거의 자료들로부터 역사적 해석·서사를 도출해내는 작업이라면, 그러한 역사적 서사를 제시하는 문헌 자체를 어떻게 지성사적으로 분석할 수 있을지를 생각해봅니다.

출석 및 수업참여 20%, 과제/토론 30%, 발표(발제) 20%, 기말과제 30% 입니다.
